As an Information
Technology graduate, I never had the idea that a lot of people had a common
misconception about RAM and Hard Disk. The thing is, although they’re both
memory, they do perform two different tasks for your computer system.
To explain it without
having to go through the technical know-how, let's compare your computer to a
kitchen. The cook, who manipulates everything, is your PROCESSOR. Of course,
what would be a kitchen without cabinets, drawers, refrigerator and most of all
a table where a cook does his thing like chopping and mixing, and where all the
ingredients that he needs for that certain dish is all arranged and lined-up.
Having said that,
we can compare our HARD DISK to the cabinets, drawers and refrigerator on our
kitchen where we store all utensils and ingredients (in computer, the files)
ready for dispersal the minute we need them. On the other hand, we can compare
a RAM to the cook's table. This is somewhat a workspace where we put and
prepare the things that we need for that particular task which in our case, a
dish that requires specific ingredients and utensils.
A RAM is there,
just like the table, to speed things up. Imagine a cook without his table to
work on. It maybe possible, but it would make simple task a complicated one
like chopping or mixing ingredients. Additionally, he won't be able to prepare
the ingredients ahead of time as there is no space to place them on.
Hope I managed to enlighten your brain’s neuron. Until then,
bon appeGEEK!
P.S.:
I’m not a cook. I’m just curious as to how things work.
